Louise's Story - I Am Still Me
Adapting a home
New self-help guide to housing equipment, aids and
adaptations
A new self-help guide for people needing housing equipment, aids
and adaptations in Scotland has been published. Paper-based, to
suit the many older and disabled people who don't have access to
the internet, Adapt2Fit offers guidance on how to choose aids and
equipment, where to find them and when to seek advice from
professionals.
Aimed to equip readers with the information they need to help
themselves, a range of ideas are offered that vary from simple to
more complex. For example, an 'adaptation' could be as simple as
moving a piece of furniture or using an everyday item in a
different way. To assist in situations where specialised
equipment is required, a list of Scotland-wide directory of
specialist suppliers is provided.
The brochure format features extensive use of diagrams and
follows best practice in terms of accessible information. Its
larger print, matt finish and good colour contrast make it
particularly well suited for visually impaired people. Simple
design elements, like the spiral-bound format, make it far easier
for those with limited dexterity to use by allowing it to lay flat
when open.
The guide has been published by Glasgow Centre for Inclusive
Living (GCIL) and draws from the expertise of occupational
therapists and housing professionals, amongst other specialists. It
mirrors the interactive information available on www.adapt2fit.org.uk and has
been produced in partnership with the Scottish Government,
Capability Scotland and the Link Group. Adapt2Fit complements www.Home2Fit.org.uk, the
national online accessible Housing database and self-help resource
that assists disabled and older people to find suitable
housing.
