About Us
Glasgow CIL is a disabled people's user led Organisation
(DPULO) committed to promoting inclusive living by assisting
disabled people to challenge barriers and make informed
choices.
Our Organisation
We are a community business run by disabled people, working for and with disabled people. We are a registered charity and company limited by guarantee.
Aims and Values
GCIL is part of the Independent Living Movement. It is an organisation OF, not FOR, disabled people. Full membership of GCIL is open to all disabled people.
History
The first Centre for Inclusive Living (CIL) was started in
Berkeley, California in 1973. A young student called Ed
Roberts had mounted a campaign to be allowed into the
University. Even though he had all the right qualifications
he had been refused entry because he used a powerchair and
breathing respirator and the University felt his impairment made
him unfit to attend the course.
